Description
Propecia (Finasteride 1 mg)
What it does:
Propecia (Finasteride 1 mg) is an oral medication used to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). It works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). By lowering DHT levels in the scalp, Propecia helps slow hair loss and, in many cases, promotes regrowth in affected areas.
Normal Applications:
Propecia is prescribed for men experiencing mild to moderate hair loss, particularly thinning at the crown and mid-scalp. It is intended for long-term daily use to maintain results. A higher-dose version of finasteride (5 mg) is prescribed under a different brand name for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Common Side Effects:
Potential side effects may include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, reduced semen volume, and, in rare cases, breast tenderness or enlargement. Some individuals may experience mood changes. While most side effects resolve after discontinuation, persistent symptoms have been reported in rare cases. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets due to the risk of fetal harm.
Administration Recommendations & Ideal Dosages:
The standard dosage for hair loss is 1 mg taken once daily, with or without food. Consistent daily use is required to maintain benefits, and noticeable results typically take 3–6 months or longer. Discontinuation usually results in gradual reversal of hair preservation within 6–12 months. Use should be guided by a healthcare professional.
