Description

Bacteriostatic Water (Sterile Water with 0.9% Benzyl Alcohol)
What it does:
Bacteriostatic Water is a sterile, non-pyrogenic water solution that contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The benzyl alcohol inhibits the growth of bacteria, allowing the solution to be used multiple times after initial entry. It is commonly used to dilute or reconstitute injectable medications before administration.

Normal Applications:
Bacteriostatic Water is widely used in medical and clinical settings for reconstituting lyophilized (freeze-dried) medications such as peptides, hormones, and certain injectable pharmaceuticals. It is intended for intramuscular, subcutaneous, or intravenous preparation depending on the medication being mixed. Because it contains a preservative, it is suitable for multi-dose use within the recommended time frame after first puncture.

Common Side Effects:
When used appropriately for reconstitution, side effects are rare. Mild injection site irritation may occur depending on the medication being mixed. Individuals sensitive to benzyl alcohol may experience localized reactions. It should not be used in newborns or premature infants due to the risk of benzyl alcohol toxicity.

Administration Recommendations & Ideal Dosages:
Bacteriostatic Water is not administered alone but is used to dilute or dissolve injectable medications according to the specific product’s reconstitution guidelines. The volume used depends entirely on the medication being prepared and the desired concentration. Once opened, it is typically recommended to discard the vial within 28 days. Always follow proper sterile technique and medical guidance when handling and preparing injectable solutions.
